The Color of Roses: A Curated Spectrum of 300 Blooms

By Danielle Dall’Armi Hahn

A unique photographic collection of 300 stunning roses that spans the full spectrum of the flower's shades and hues, creating a breathtaking rainbow that will amaze flower lovers of all kinds.

Few flowers come in as many colors as the beloved rose. Curated by award-winning rosarian Danielle Dall'Armi Hahn, who personally owns more than 30,000 roses, the flowers in The Color of Roses were selected not only for their glorious and subtle color combinations but also for optimal availability, repeat blooming, disease resistance, improved vase life, and fragrance.

Organized by color, these 300 full-page photos take you on a journey through all the marvelous shades of white, yellow, pink, peach, purple, orange, red, caramel, and even green blossoms—not to mention striped and bicolor. This modern compilation of the world's 300 most beautiful roses includes the essential statistics for each one, including name, plant type and size, breeder, and more to help gardeners, rose lovers, and floral designers discover their new favorite.

Roses have been treasured for centuries. They bloom from spring until frost, in virtually all but the most frigid zones and in a great range of varieties to suit every taste. The Color of Roses is the ultimate guide for selecting the perfect color rose for your garden, special event, or floral arrangement.

OUR STORY

Rose Story Farm® began in 1998, when we decided to try growing 1000 rose bushes on a half acre of our lemon and avocado farm. We imagined an old-fashioned rose farm, with the radiant hues of European and pre-1950 American varieties in bloom across our 15 acre Carpinteria Valley farm. Our mission has been, from the very first day, to produce beautiful, fragrant, romantic roses in exquisite shapes and colors. We are dedicated to producing the highest quality roses in our gardens, and Rose Story Farm now grows 30,000 rose bushes, with over 130 varieties.

We both grew up in families that were wild about gardening, and our grandmothers on each side were rosarians. Bill was raised on a potato farm in central Washington, and some of the magical qualities of farming rubbed off on him. So we chose to transform part of our lemon orchard into rose fields. Bill bulldozed hundreds of lemon trees, while I poured over rose books and catalogs to select my favorite 1,000 rose bushes. Memories of my grandmother’s fragrant roses inspired me to select mainly old world roses with enticing scents.

Our farm is a family-owned business. We named the farm Rose Story Farm because roses are central to some of our family's most enchanting experiences. We hope that our clients, visitors, and friends will share their rose stories with us. Our hope is to allow you to share in an experience that has been both romantic and passionate, joyful and sustaining.

The farm is truly a family affair, and we find some of our best moments together, walking among and “working the rows.” Our roses bring us together to enjoy the simple pleasures of country life, and our family appreciates and savors the time we spend together caring for these exquisite flowers.

Great Rosarians of the World

Danielle of Rose Story Farm in Carpinteria was honored in 2014 with the Great Rosarians of the World Award. The bicoastal celebrations took place in February at the Huntington Library in Pasadena and in June at the New York Botanic Garden. She joins an elite group of recipients including David Austin (UK), Peter Beales (UK), Wilhelm Kordes (Germany), and Alain Meilland (France). Rose Story Farm is a successful blend of small-scale niche farming and educational outreach and has been recognized as a model for small family farms. The award, which acknowledges these achievements, is co-sponsored by the Huntington Library and the New York Metropolitan Rose Council, honoring men and women who have made significant contributions to the cultivation and appreciation of roses.
